Renewable energy for steel making
- Dr. Rudolf ZAUNER
Today, the majority share of energy demand for steelmaking is provided by fossil energy sources. Future energy scenarios based on significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by introducing increasing shares of renewable energy sources call for new energy concepts for steelworks. Green energy, such as renewable electricity and renewable gases, needs to substitute fossil process gases and energy carriers. Supply of these alternative sources – such as green hydrogen – will require a new way of thinking about where and when this energy is produced and how it is transported to the point of use. Energy suppliers and industrial customers such as the steel industry need to work together to find optimum solutions. A number of different concepts for providing renewable energy to steelworks will be covered in the presentation.
